History / Notes
One of the earliest converts (6th or 7th person) and among the first to suffer brutal persecution in Mecca. A freed blacksmith who was tortured by having hot coals placed on his bare back. He directly questioned the Prophet ﷺ about when divine help would come. After the Hijra, he fought at Badr and other battles. Known for his deep knowledge of the Quran, he taught recitation in Medina and Kufa. He died in Kufa around 657 CE and is considered one of the foremost in virtue for his early suffering for Islam.
